Pat Corina was born in 1938 in Shipley, just north of Bradford, and died in Leicester on 23 July 2007. Despite living for many years in the Midlands, Pat was immensely proud of her northern roots. She studied English at Liverpool University, and worked for many years as an English teacher, first in Africa (Malawi) and then in England. Pat was very active in Leicester Poetry Society, first as competition organiser, then as Chair. In 2000 she was a founder member of the Midlands-based women’s poetry group Soundswrite.
The editors of Lines North believe that Pat Corina’s poetry ranks alongside the best modern poetry written in the last twenty years, and this selection is a unique opportunity to bring it to a wider readership.
Cathy Grindrod: It is so good to have all of Pat Corina’s poems, in their ‘deep and various’ truths, gathered together in this sensitively edited collection. These poems form complete worlds, whether evoking childhood hillsides, custard, yarn, places familiar and strange, war zones; or introducing a host of colourful characters - each one expertly drawn.
Catherine Byron: Lines North is a beautiful book - and what an excellent cover for the riches it contains. It is fierce and tender and funny with the usual suspects – landscape, ancestors, "the past as riddle and evidence". What is extraordinary is the intensity of the 'now' that burns through this collection.
